DescriptionAmateur Glenroy photographer Bessie Powell toured the South Island in 1927 to capture images of monuments. Many of these were relatively newly constructed war memorials honouring those who had lost their lives in WW1.
This series of images shows the monuments in their original landscapes, before the addition of the names of those who died in subsequent conflicts. Some of these have now been relocated or had other structures built or demolished around them; others look identical in their contemporary surroundings.
