1872 3rd Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
Description
Title1872 3rd Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
DescriptionIn February 1872, a special meeting (All meetings until the Society had its own office, except for large gatherings, took place in Loe’s (later Spring’s) Leeston Hotel) was advertised to discuss the propriety of purchasing a piece of ground for the Society. [20 February 1872 p1 CHP]
Planning for the 3rd show started in September 1872 [11 September 1872 p1 CHP, 11 September 1872 p2 CHP, 20 September 1872 p2 CHP].
It was decided to hold the 3rd show on the 19th December with the dinner costing 3s 6d that evening starting at 5pm sharp.
L.D. Lawrence resigned as secretary and was replaced by C.L. Barker. [17 December 1872 p3 CHP]
An earlier decision that all sheep should be shorn was reversed and the list of classes should be the same as last year with the addition of 4 classes for half-breed sheep.
Mr Lawrence sent in his resignation as secretary and Mr C.F. Barker was elected in his place. [20 September 1872 p2 CHP]
3rd show 1872
The third show was a success but may have been a greater success had it been held earlier although the Lyttelton Times reporter suggested that, "The marked success hitherto characterising the Ellesmere Agricultural exhibition has justly been a source of congratulation to the whole province. The district necessarily felt great satisfaction at the successful establishment of an off-shoot from the Metropolitan Show".
However the Lyttelton Times was blunt in saying that there was no improvement in the stock exhibited as compared with last year owing to the fact that farmers were busy with harvest and sheep could not be kept unshorn until mid-December.
The day started very hot but by 11am a cool breeze sprang up.
There was a very large attendance of visitors from all parts of the district and “the ground presented a most animated scene”.
The principal means of conveyance from Christchurch was a large mail coach again put on by A.G. Saunders.
Only the light construction of the cattle pens which allowed some of them to escape, and the fixing of numbers on some exhibits could be criticised.
Booths were pitched for the sale of refreshments, and did good business in the hot weather, and the only side show was a wheel of fortune.
The CYC Brass Band, under Herr Bunz, again enlivened the proceedings with excellent music.
The show of sheep was very good considering the lateness of the season. Sheep were judged on purity of breed and in this respect the long wools were "most prominent".
"The show of cattle was anything but what might fairly be expected in such a large and wealthy district".
The show of horses taken as a whole was very good with the draught stock, particularly mares, being a great feature of the show.
The pigs were a highly creditable lot while the implements made a very poor show. Many of the machines were imported and a recently imported broad cast sowing machine received favourable comments.
The dairy class was miserably represented due no doubt to the small value of the prizes.
The officers of the A&P in its third year were as follows: Patron: W. Rolleston, Superintendent of Canterbury. President: The Rev. W.J.G. Bluett. Vice-President: A. Frankish. Committee: Messrs W. Bishop, C. Bourne, R. Gillett, G. Hepworth, D. Moorhead, W. D. Lawrence, R. Lockhead, G.Sandrey, J. Smith, G.B. Woodman, J.M. Marshall, E.B. Willis. Hon. Secretary: C.F. Barker. Treasurer: C. Bridge. [1872-12-20 p3 CHP, 1872-12-20 p2 LT]
