1882 13th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
Description
Title1882 13th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
DescriptionAt the final meeting for 1881, a request was made and granted for the use of the ground and shed on Christmas day to hold the annual treat of the Leeston Presbyterian Sabbath School.
A decision on prize money was made at the meeting. [1881-12-03 p3 LT]
The 1882 AGM was advertised to be held on 2nd June [1882-05-31 p1 LT] it was reported that the number of subscribing members increased during the past year from 80 to 99 and that the previous show was an “unprecedented success”.
While the takings did not quite reach that of previous year, the Association was in an eminently satisfactory financial position.
Thanks were given to people, especially Mr Lunn, who supervised the construction of the produce/secretary's shed. [1882-06-05 p3 GLOBE, 1882-06-05 p6 LT]
For the 1882 show, the programme of 1881 was adopted with a new slight alterations and it was decided at the committee meeting that the show was to be held on Tuesday October 31st.
At times during the existence of the A&P Association there was a move to incorporate the education function of the Farmers’ Club that had set up the Association.
At this meeting there was a talk on what the promoters of the European flax industry proposed doing, provided a sufficient area was sown with flax in the district.
John Davis explained the cost of growth and probable revenue. [1882-07-06 p3 LT]
In August, the Ellesmere A&P Association organised a public meeting in the Leeston Town Hall to consider present high rates charged by NZ railways. [1882-08-12 p1 LT]
The annual parade of entire horses was advertised to be held in the show ground on Friday, 22 September at noon with an entrance fee of 5s. [1882-08-26 p1 LT, 1882-09-16 p1 LT]
13th Show 1882
The exceedingly good weather meant that while there was a good attendance of visitors, as a whole the 1882 show was scarcely up to the usual average with 125 less entries than in 1881.
The Leeston band was on the ground and described as "good" however the big drum failed to follow the tune.
The armless lady and the phonograph were on exhibition. Also two Ethiopian serenaders playing banjo and bones were well supported with coins.
Lotteries, galleries and the inevitable confectioners’ stalls were "in high force".
Sheep classes showed a falling off, put down to some exhibitors leaving the district and those that remained not entering without chance of competition.
There were only 5 Leicester sheep entries out of 69 entries, and only one sheep was of show quality.
At the start of the Lyttelton Times article the reporter stated that in the horses and cattle classes there was a fairly good number exhibited although the majority of the cattle “looked very rough”. Further down the article, the 60 cattle exhibits were described as "up to show average" and the GLOBE reporter stated that some very good cattle were exhibited.
Pigs were few and not spectacular and nearly all belonged to W.J.G. Bluett. Pigs imported from the farm of the Prince of Wales attracted attention.
The sheep dogs exhibited were good-looking animals but it was back to the old ways and no trials were undertaken.
Some birds were cooped up in boxes not nearly large enough for them and committee should exclude poultry from the show.
There were a fairly numerous collection of implements at the 1882 Show. T. Durant, a local builder, gained well deserved first prizes for his carriage work especially his dog-cart.
The new produce shed was a welcome change from the tents of the past but this change of venue did not encourage more entries, in fact there was a great falling off compared with 1881. The cheese, bacon and ham exhibits had problems, although the 50lb salted butter exhibits were excellent.
The grain exhibits were small in number but especially the wheat was of excellent quality and formed one of the brightest points of the Show.
Very little fault could be found with the half-dozen exhibits of wool.
There was no display of silverware, given as private prizes, at this event as there was a change back to cash prizes.
