1889 20th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
Description
Title1889 20th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
DescriptionThe committee meeting that followed the 1888 Show, attracted a large attendance.
It was felt that the Association should ask government to construct a siding opposite the Showgrounds for unloading and loading stock coming by rail to the show.
It was decided to arrange for the train to arrive at least one hour earlier at the show in the morning as existing arrangements greatly extended judging.
The secretary, Mr Jameson was complimented and awarded £20 as he had been in many previous years.
There was a vote of thanks for the judges. [1888-11-19 p3 LT]
There was a very large attendance at the AGM to hear the report on the largest number of exhibits since formation of the society.
£235 10s was awarded in prize money, £73 of which was special prizes. Expenditure was £350 4s 5d leaving a credit of £6 9s 9d.
The 1889 show was scheduled to be held on Thursday, October 24.
The show programme was approved and judges were selected. [1889-08-22 p3 LT, 1889-08-22 p6 incorrect pagination CHP, 1889-08-29 p3 TS]
The members who attended the September committee meeting were told of a letter from Sir John Hall stating that the railways would erect a gate in the fence opposite the show ground so people and stock could move straight into the Show Grounds.
Again it was again decided to sell the services at the Show by public auction rather than tenders.
It was also decided that no games of chance or gaming tables would be allowed on the ground.
Class stewards for the exhibits were appointed. [1889-09-23 p4 TS 1889-09-23 p6 LT]
The regular advertisements appeared before the show. [1889-10-09 p1 LT, 1889-10-10 p1 CHP, 1889-10-11 p1 CHP, 1889-10-11 p1 CHP, 1889-10-11 p1 CHP, 1889-10-18 p1 TS, 1889-10-19 p1 CHP, 1889-10-22 p1 CHP]
20th Show 1889
The weather for the 20th show was threatening in the morning but turned out beautifully fine and £61 was taken at the gates, a similar amount to 1888.
The train was early and so town visitors reached the Showgrounds before they were expected.
Catering was carried out by Mr W. Robinson of Armagh Street, Mr W. Spring of Leeston had the publican's booth, while Mr W. Edwards of Sydenham the confectioner’s booth.
The Leeston band, on a raised platform, played during the afternoon. As decided at an earlier committee meeting there were no gaming tables at the Show.
The number of entries was down in a few classes, particularly dairy produce, while in some instances there was a total lack of competition.
In some classes, outside competitors took all the prizes.
The reporter warned that with the Ellesmere show open to all-comers, local people were shut out and will stop competing.
In so pronounced a dairying district as Ellesmere it is surprising that the show of cattle should have been so limited in extent, and the quality was inferior to those in a metropolitan show.
The sheep entries were disappointing as there was little competition in some of the main classes.
This year’s show was proof that the district has in no way declined in the quality of its draught horses.
The judges commented that shearing 9 sheep in one hour was too many for blade shears and the quota should be reduced to 8 sheep.
The best pigs were exhibited by growers from outside Ellesmere,
Of the cattle none would be good enough to send to the Metropolitan Show.
Patron Sir John Hall, President Mr W.R. Maddison, Vice-Presidents Mr C. Withell and Mr John McKellar, Treasurer W.H. Woodman, Auditors Messrs R. Lochhead and P. O'Boyle, Secretary Mr F. Jameson
