Description
Title1894 25th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
DescriptionA very successful trial of grubbers was held in November by Ellesmere A&P for a special prize of £3.3s given by Mr T.B. Howson.
Machines competed on light land that was full of twitch. There was a very good attendance of farmers. One of Mr Drummond’s machines from Kirwee was best. [1893-11-23 p3 LT, 1893-12-02 p9 CHP]
The main item on the agenda of a Committee meeting held in April 1894 was topics for discussion of at a national meeting to be held in Wellington at the end of May.
Topics suggested ranged from “Barley not sugar to be used in beer manufacturing” to “poisoning and destruction of small birds and blackbirds”.
Ellesmere was to send two delegates. [1894-04-12 p5 CHP]
There was a large attendance at the 22nd AGM where the annual report high-lighted the slight decrease in entries but the increase in some major classes notably sheep entries and attempts to make the Association more relevant by holding talks.
It was also decided to elect only one vice president and reduce general committee from 36 to 24.
The Ellesmere A&P Society had 126 annual members and 16 life members in 1894. [1894-05-05 p5 CHP, 1894-05-05 p6 LT, 1894-05-05 p6 TS]
More than 30 members were present at a Committee and General Meeting where minor alterations were made to the rules to align the Association with the Act.
It was agreed that member’s ticket would admit the member and two of his family. [1894-05-30 p1 CHP, 1894-06-16 p8 CHP, 1894-06-23 p2 EG]
It was decided that the noxious weeds Bill would inflict great hardship on farmers.
Several new classes were introduced for the show e.g. separator butter [1894-08-30 p3 CHP, 1894-08-31 p5 LT]
It was announced at the September meeting that the implement manufacturers had decided not to exhibit in 1894 but on a positive note a weight guessing competition was to be added.
Mr George Jameson was elected a member of the committee.
The date of the show was fixed for October 25.
[1894-09-07 p4 LT, 1894-09-07 p5 TS]
25th Show 1894
There was large attendance at the first of the Canterbury agricultural shows for 1894 and the weather looked threatening for an hour about midday but this passed and then it was a beautiful day.
There was the largest ever entries of stock to fill the 40 new sheep and 10 cattle pens that had been built.
In contrast to past years there was no general license booth (replaced by cider) at the show and again Mr & Mrs W. Edwards, of Sydenham gave every satisfaction with their luncheon and refreshment booths.
The Burnham Band again played a long program of popular music at the show.
The stock were generally in excellent condition and there were a large number entries in weight guessing competition that was a new feature.
There was a large entry of sheep in most classes.
The creameries had vanquished home-made dairy products.
The grain and seed classes were better filled in 1894 than previously and potatoes and roots were new classes.
The exhibition of implements was smaller than usual, although several of the larger firms had sent good collections of up-to-date machinery.
One notable new feature of the show was the large brick tank and fountain has been erected largely without cost to hold the artesian water from the new well. [1894-09-20 p8 LT, 1894-10-09 p1 CHP, 1894-10-09 p1 LT, 1894-10-26 p3 CHP, 1894-10-26 p3 LT, 1894-10-26 p4 TS, 1894-11-09 p7 CHP, 1894-11-09 p7 CHP]
