1895 26th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
Description
Title1895 26th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
DescriptionThe post-show Committee meeting noted that the district’s exhibits did well at Christchurch show taking a number of champion prizes.
New yards had been erected for the 1894 show and 159 entries had been received at the show.
Job Osborne gave notice that he would move at the next meeting that the Association would erect a public shearing shed at the show grounds and that machinery would be used and the shed would accommodate 1000 sheep.
It was decided to have the Boy's Pony Riding Competition and the Pony Jumping Competition that were left unjudged at the show on the afternoon of December 15th. In addition it was decided to add a Hunters Jumping Competition. [1894-12-07 p3 CHP, 1894-12-08 p2 EG, 1894-12-08 p2 EG, 1894-12-08 p4 LT]
The reports of the 1895 AGM showed that while member’s subscriptions were down, there was a small credit balance.
Infrastructure improvements included a ticket office and a fountain and basin to the artesian well. [1895-05-15 p1 CHP, 1895-06-01 p2 LT, 1895-06-01 p7 TS, 1895-06-01 p9 CHP]
Three committee meetings were reported between July to October 1895 and the usual subcommittees were appointed, programme for show decided and a few new classes were introduced.
The public were allowed to use the plantation and the grounds were now well sheltered.
As far back as 1871 there had been a publican’s booth but in 1895 no licence could be obtained from the Licensing Committee.
It is interesting to note that even in 1895 the Ellesmere A&P was prepared to protest at importation of Canadian bacon. [1895-07-06 p8 TS, 1895-07-06 p9 CHP, 1895-08-19 p6 LT, 1895-09-20 p2 LT, 1895-09-20 p4 TS]
In October more reports of meetings and advertisements appeared in the newspapers.
Lincoln College was to analyse the milk of cows in the milk production competition, and the railways advertised an excursion train and low fares.
Several Brass Bands offered to play at the 1895 Show and the Burnham Industrial School Band accepted at £7.
Entries were higher than in 1894 but the stock condition was expected to be backward because of a wet winter and a dry spring. [1895-10-07 p1 CHP, 1895-10-07 p4 LT, 1895-10-09 p8 LT, 1895-10-12 p6 TS, 1895-10-17 p2 LT, 1895-10-17 p4 TS, 1895-10-19 p7 CHP, 1895-10-19 p11 CHP, 1895-10-24 p3 TS, 1895-10-24 p4 LT]
26th Show 1895
The Show day was fine and the attendance was large.
The number of exhibits was a record. The quality of the exhibits was good and the show was successful in every respect.
The band from the Burnham Industrial School played excellently.
W. Edwards who has provided luncheons for the Show for the past 8 years provided a good luncheon and tea.
Because Leeston was in the Ashburton licensing district there was no licensed booth but Golden apple cider was served.
The sheep exhibits kept their previous importance.
Cattle were the best ever seen at Leeston show even with the bad weather prior to the show.
Produce was good.
The pig judges protested about oil on pigs.
Implements far fewer than previous shows and some firms did not exhibit.
Several exhibitors from Ellesmere went on to secure prizes at the Canterbury Show. [1895-10-25 p1 TS, 1895-10-25 p3 LT, 1895-10-26 p4 LT, 1895-11-16 p2 EG]
