1899 30th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
Description
Title1899 30th Year of the Ellesmere Agricultural & Pastoral Association
DescriptionA trial of two seed cleaning machines that had been exhibited at the Ellesmere Show was carried out at the Christchurch store of the NZ Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. One machine was better at cleaning seed but of light construction, but was awarded the prize, while the other was not as good at cleaning but was more robust. [1898-11-01 p3 LT]
A Committee meeting was held at the end of 1898 to discuss matters from the show and other matters. It appeared that financial retrenchment was needed. Train speed was also a matter for discussion. [1898-11-23 p2 LT, 1898-11-23 p4 CHP, 1898-12-26 p5 LT]
A letter was read at Selwyn County Council (SCC) from Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking if the SCC would agree to exchange part of Reserve 304 with the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association (EAPA). [1899-04-26 p TS]
At the committee meeting of the Ellesmere A&P held before the AGM it was decided that the Ellesmere district must make a special effort to win the trophies offered at the Christchurch Winter Show and sub-committees were appointed to gather support.
The £20 prize, offered by Canterbury A&P for the greatest number of points at winter show, was won by Ellesmere. [1899-05-19 p4 TS, 1899-07-13 p5 LT 1899-07-13 p5 LT]
There was a large attendance at the AGM held at the Leeston Hotel.
Letter from Sydenham Poultry Association was read offering to sell a number of poultry and pigeon pens, and the decision was left to the oncoming committee.
The success of the lectures held in 1898 and the 1898 show were commented on in the report to the meeting.
The Balance Sheet showed a credit and the election of officers undertaken. [1899-05-31 p1 TS, 1899-05-31 p2 LT]
At a committee meeting following the AGM, two members were asked to inspect the poultry pens.
The Ellesmere A&P had successfully tendered £5/annum for the reserve fronting the show grounds and this was sub leased at the same rental. [1899-06-21 p3 LT, 1899-06-21 p4 TS, 1899-06-28 p5 LT]
A&P good works. In a note published in the Lyttleton Times, Dudley Hampton thanked the ELlesmere A&P for help in replacing his horses who had been accidentally killed. [1899-07-08 p1 LT]
A&P General Committee meeting report. There was a report on the details of the winter show win but regret that other prizes were not won and it was noted that there was a very sparse attendance of farmers at the show. [1899-07-21 p2 LT]
Preparations for the Leeston Show, to be held on the October 31st, began and the classes for the show were reviewed. Judges were appointed and it was decided to admit junior members. [1899-07-21 p2 LT]
T.B. Howson offered a prize for a skimming plough after practical trial which was to be held in Lochhead’s paddock on October 13th.
The ground which varied from very wet to dry & stoney tested the ploughs. A large crowd of farmers watched and the results were to be announced at the show. [1899-08-03 p5 LT, 1899-10-11 p1 LT, 1899-10-14 p7 LT]
During 1899, the stallion parade was held in W. Spring’s Recreation Grounds and there were to be talks on “Fruit Culture” & “Practical Poultry Keeping”. [1899-09-23 p11 CHP, 1899-09-20 p3 EG, 1899-09-25 p3 CHP]
Preparations for the show included tenders for the Publican’s Booth, a meeting to decide on fees for junior members and extra classes for juveniles and improvements for poultry and dairy produce displays.
J.R. Charlton resigned as the Ellesmere A&P vet. Details of the train, Brass Band, Hunting & Jumping Competitions were advertised. [1899-09-09 p11 CHP , 1899-09-23 p11 CHP, 1899-09-30 p9 LT, 1899-10-11 p1 LT, 1899-10-14 p3 EG, 1899-10-18 p8 CHP, 1899-10-21 p1 LT, 1899-10-23 p1 LT, 1899-10-24 p1 LT, 1899-10-24 p5 LT, 1899-10-26 p1 LT]
30th Show 1899, October 31
The weather was bright for the 30th 1899 show, the trains carrying many passengers, with 10 more entries than in 1898.
The gate takings were £78 with over 2000 in ground.
Sheep exhibits showed a considerable increase over 1898, 181 vs 224 entries.
Of the English Leicesters, F. Wright of Dunsandel showed pride of place.
Cattle numbers were disappointing with Shorthorns more than good.
Although some of the classes for horses were not as numerous as in previous shows, the animals present were mostly good, and in some classes, both in number and quality, the display was as good as any previous show.
Pigs were better than the previous year with Mr G.E. Rhodes’s pig pens filled for the first time.
Dairy product classes were a good deal behind last year with the bacon exhibits nearly empty.
In contrast to the early shows, most of the poultry was first class, the majority of the entries being from well-known fanciers.
The feature of show was an Industrial Exhibition in connection with manual Classes of Education Department with Doyleston School to the fore.
There was not much competition in grain and roots.
There was an abundance of music and sideshows and the Woolston Brass Band produced stirring tunes.
W. Edward’s catering was excellent or satisfactory depending on the newspaper.
Office accommodation was utterly inadequate. [1899-11-01 p2 EG, 1899-11-01 p6 LT, 1899-11-04 p3 EG, 1899-11-13 p1 LT]
The election of officers resulted as follows: — Patron," Mr G.E. Rhodes ; president Mr J. Stackhouse ; vice-president, Mr W.F.M. Buckley; treasurer, Mr C.C. Smithson ; auditors, Messrs J. Rennie and R. Lochhead; general committee. Messrs D. McMillan, R. Lochhead, H. Hight, J. Osborne, J. Storry, F. Coe, C. Withell, R, Wright, T. B. Howson, J. Boag. sen., W. G. Lunn, J. Barnett. J.
