Other Biographical InformationAnn Isabella (aka Belle) Gleghorn was born 31 Jul 1851 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, daughter of William Cleghorn and Mary, nee Bainbridge. Her father died a year after her birth and as was usual her mother remarried in 1855 to David Wilkinson, a coal miner. In 1872, on 22 August, Ann herself married Andrew Jackson Nuttall, also a miner, in Morpeth District, Northumberland and their first child, David, was born in 1873, followed by two children John William and Maria, who died young. It seems that Andrew emigrated to Australia in 1876 but returned to England before 1877 when Maria was born.
The family then emigrated to New Zealand sometime before 1882 when son Andrew was born in Springfield. Andrew first appears in the 1882 Electoral Roll as a miner but later took up farming at Annat. They were fully engaged in the community. Andrew was on the School Committee and they were members of the Primitive Methodist Church in Annat and supporters of the Sunday School and associated Band of Hope. Ann signed the 1893 Suffrage petition on page 187 alongside others from Annat, Sheffield and Russells Flat. She was enrolled to vote on the 1893 Electoral Roll at number 2061 as Ann Isabella Nuttall, Annat. In 1907, after selling the farm, the family moved to Nelson. They were farewelled by the Primitive Methodist congregation and Rev B. Dudley, on behalf of the congregation, presented a travelling rug to Mr and Mrs Nuttall, and a lady’s companion to Miss Nuttall, "as marks of esteem and appreciation of their services in Church and Sunday school." They settled first at Brightwater and later at Richmond where Andrew farmed. Andrew died in June of 1923 and Ann Isabella two years later aged 73 on September 23rd 1925. Both are buried in Richmond Cemetery.
