Other Biographical InformationMartha, and her twin Mary, were born on 20 February 1868 in Christchurch, Canterbury, daughters of William Tresidder and Sarah Ann Newsome. Her parents had arrived in 1863 on board the "Chariot of Fame" settling in Annat. Over their time there her parents operated a shop, ran a hotel and farmed and Martha would probably have helped with these. The family was involved with both the Primitive Methodist Church and the Band of Hope. Martha often played the organ and took part in the entertainments given by the Band of Hope. She was also active in the Methodist Sunday School. In 1882, she and sister Mary were presented with albums, Martha for work in the Sunday School and Mary for playing the Harmonium for services. As was usual at the time, her father William thanked the church on their behalf. Both were in demand as organists. Martha Tresidder signed the 1892 Suffrage petition on page 449/255 alongside her mother, her sister signing as Mary Heighway. Martha signed the 1893 Suffrage Petition on page 185, alongside her mother and sister and then enrolled to vote in the 1893 Election as no 2776 with her occupation given as Dressmaker. The Tresidder family moved to Hastings where Mary and her husband were living and Martha continued to work as a dressmaker.
Martha married William Henry Lean in 1901. He had been born in Hastings and worked as a Blacksmith. She bore him two sons, the first in 1907 and the second in 1909. Sadly she died at home a few days after the birth of the second, probably from Puerperal Fever, a frequent killer of new mothers. For many years there-after her parents and siblings inserted "In Memoriam" notices in the paper on the anniversary of her death, a relatively new practice. She was buried in the Hastings Cemetery. Her husband William purchased plots C315, 316 and 317 in January 1909. Martha was buried in plot 317. Her parents were later interred in plot 315 when they died. Henry did remarry in 1912 and was buried with his second wife Edith in plot 316.
