Malvern Electric Power Board
Description
NameMalvern Electric Power Board
DescriptionThe Malvern Electric Power Board was established in 1923, four years after a meeting of ratepayers from the Malvern, Tawera and Selwyn counties voted in favour of a power district.
When chronicling the progress made in the Malvern County over the last 50 years and more it would be easy to overlook an amenity which is now so commonplace it is taken for granted. Yet when the Malvern County Council was formed in 1911 it preceded the supply of electricity in the district by 14 years.
The Malvern Electric Power Board was established in 1923, four years after a meeting of ratepayers from the Malvern, Tawera and Selwyn counties voted in favour of a power district.
The newly elected board raised a loan of £40,000 and the first pole was erected on April 28, 1925, and less than two months later the power was turned on for the first time at a special ceremony at Darfield. It is now hard to think of the Canterbury Plains farms without electricity lighting the house and sheds, turning the separator, the cake mixer, and the shearing machines.
Start Date1923
