Other Biographical InformationMargaret McCulloch was born February 9 1845 in Girton Kirkcudbrightshire, daughter of Alexander McCulloch and Margaret Milligan. Her mother died in 1858 and it seems that Margaret decided to leave Scotland and move south of the border to Durham. Here she met Irishman John Montgomery, a coal miner at Leadgate and they were married on May 17 1869. The family emigrated in 1878 on board the steamship "Waitangi" arriving in Lyttleton on Oct 13. John, designated a farm labourer, and Margaret were accompanied by children, Andrew William, John, Henry James and Martha. Sadly Martha died on the voyage at just 10 months on 29 September of whooping cough. A further five children were born after their arrival in Annat. They may have been drawn to the area by proximity to the Kowai mine but he appears on the Electoral Roll as a farmer at Annat. Annat had an active Band of Hope group supported by the local Primitive Methodist church and most members of the family were involved in many of the activities with both daughters Maggie and Rebecca gaining prizes for recitation. Margaret signed the 1892 Suffrage Petition on page 449/255 and then the 1893 Suffrage petition on page 185. She may have signed the petition twice as page two also has a signature of just Montgomery, Annat which looks very similar to that on page 185. She enrolled to vote in the 1893 Election and was on the Supplementary Roll as number 3399. Around 1905 John and Margaret had moved to Bulls, near Marton in the North Island. Sadly only three years later John died in Whanganui Hospital of heart failure. Margaret moved to live with her sons Samuel and Isaac in Marton. She died in Whanganui Hospital on November 8 1918, aged 73 and was buried with John in Clifton Cemetery.
