Other Biographical InformationElizabeth Jane Coombe was born May 10 1863 in St Austell, Cornwall, eldest daughter of William Henry Coumbe and Mary Ann Osborne. The family name has various spellings; Coumbe and Coombe, with or without and e at the end. Known as Jane, she came to New Zealand in 1875 with her parents and siblings on board the "Wellington", arriving at Port Chalmers in February of 1875. Three more children were born after arrival. The family came to the area sometime before 1880 when daughter Ellen was at Russells Flat school. Jane married, at age 18, Johannes Zandstra, aged 36, at the Registrar Office in Waddington on November 2nd 1881. The family moved to Reefton and two daughters were born. Sadly Johannes was killed in a logging accident on April 16 1883 when he attempted to move a big log which rolled and killed him outright. As was common in such "deserving cases", the people of Reefton subscribed to a fund for the widow and children. With two young children to care for she probably returned to her parents in Springfield.
She would have been just twenty years old and without any means of support. As was common, Jane remarried. Her new husband was Thomas Broomfield and they married on 31 May 1884 in Christchurch. Thomas was a widower with three sons, he had landed in Lyttelton on the ship "Waitangi" on 5 Oct 1877 and had settled in Annat. They had a further eight children. Jane signed the 1892 Petition on page 449/255 and the following year the 1893 petition page 185 giving her residence as Annat and was enrolled to vote in 1893 as no 554. Her mother, Mary Coombe also signed the 1893 petition. Jane's husband, Thomas died on 16 Aug 1913 and two of her sons served during the First World War. They were both wounded at Gallipoli, but survived and were invalided back to New Zealand. Jane live on in Annat until a few months before her death. She died on 22 Jan 1927 at her son's residence and is buried at Otautau, Southland.
