DescriptionMany of the annual general meetings over the period from the start of the club to the opening of the 2nd hall were reported in the newspapers [24-42].
They were held in the Dunsandel Library, usually not long before the start of the tennis season so that a starting date could be decided on.
A balance sheet was presented which showed a credit balance ranging between £2 5s 2d in 1894 [43] to £41 15s 1d in 1921 [44].
Officers and committee were elected and this included Parker Westenra as patron for some years after his election in 1894.
Patrons tended to be Members of Parliament in the 1900s.
Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies who supplied the afternoon tea in 1894 and subsequent years but in 1919 [45] the vote was to the ladies of the Croquet Club for providing afternoon tea during the year.
By 1923 [46] the club ladies were again supplying the tea.
In 1912 [47] the Ladies' Club were thanked for their liberal donation to the funds of the tennis club, but no explanation was given.
Mackie (1979) [48}records that “In its earliest days play was confined to club members” but the Ellesmere Guardian reported [49] that by March 1892 the club had beaten Southbridge at home but was beaten away because the asphalt courts at Southbridge were “faster” than the Dunsandel grass courts.
Also at the 1894 AGM [50] Thomas Irvine reported that during the year the club had played six matches and won four so their “confinement” was brief.
In 1897 [51] and 1910 [52] there were records of a general meeting of the members held in the Dunsandel Library to plan the club's annual socials.
Doubtless other unrecorded meetings were held over the years to organise the socials that the club held in the hall. The 1910 [53] meeting also decided to put down another asphalt court.
