Fyvie
Description
NameFyvie
DescriptionThe locality of Fyvie, which initially had a school from 1913 - 1927, is now no longer, although its name remains in place in Fyvie Road. The settlement was originally a subdivided part of the Camla Run, purchased by the Government in 1909 as part of the 1894 Lands For Settlement Act. Although five farms were balloted, development of farming was hindered by the high cost of establishment, lack of a consistent water supply, and the high annual leases, which were reduced to help settlers after an application to Government in 1912.
The Fyvie School, opened in 1913, was closed in 1927, its buildings used as a chaff store by teamsters from the Selwyn County Council until the buildings were moved to Awaroa, then to Peel Forest in 1949.
