Greenpark Huts
Description
NameGreenpark Huts
DescriptionMany areas around Waihora Lake Ellesmere were used for mahinga kai access, campsites and landing areas by Māori in the four or five hundred years before European settlement. Greenpark Huts, at the mouth of the Halswell River near Motukārara were settled by Pākeha from the early 1900s as a place for recreational fishing, boating and game shooting.
In 1998, with the passing of the Ngai Tahu Land Settlement Act, the area, including the lake bed, was returned to iwi ownership, with Greenpark Huts re-vested as a mahinga kai or food gathering access site.
In 2020 the 32 hut lessees were advised by Ngai Tahu, that they had until 2024 to vacate the settlement, which sits on a site of immense significance to the iwi for cultural reasons and mahinga kai - the natural resources of the area.
