NameEllesmereDescriptionA settlement, not to be confused with Lake Ellesmere or Ellesmere County, located on the northern side of the Waikirikiri Selwyn River, in the Springs Road District. The Ellesmere Swamp was a well-known feature of the area. Ellesmere Station was a stop on the railway line to the Selwyn River that opened on 26 April 1875. The Ellesmere Post Office was located at the railway station between 1877 and the end of 1924 when rural delivery was introduced. Ellesmere School opened at the end of 1898 on the intersection of Swamp and Marshall's Roads, and closed in 1946. Gradually, as the other amenities closed, Ellesmere became part of the larger Springston district.Geolocation[1]
