Other Biographical InformationBarbara Edwards was born September 27,1842 at Ellon, Aberdeen, Sctland, daughter of John Edwards and Barbara Morgan. She was the younger sister of Mary Edwards (Williamson) and emigrated with her and brother Robert Edwards to New Zealand. They arrived on board the Queen of the Mersey, arriving on October 20th, 1862, and settling in Christchurch and later in Kowai Bush/Springfield where her brother Robert was in partnership with Henry Williamson in the General Store. Barbara married John Wills Yates in 1875, on 20 April at the Durham St Methodist Church. John, born in 1834 in Plymouth, Devon, was a farmer at Russell's Flat. He was very involved in local affairs, the first Postmaster of the Russells Flat Post Office when it opened in 1878, he was also on the Roads Board and School Board, as well as the Circut Steward of the Methodist Church. They had five children between 1876 and 1885. Barbara, like her sister, signed the 1892 Suffrage Petition page 447/354 and then the 1893 Suffrage Petition on page 188. She was enrolled to vote in 1893 on the Main Roll no 3124. She was aged 51 at the time of signing. John and Barbara sold the properties in Russells Flat in 1908 and moved into Christchurch, living in Sydenham. It is here that John died on August 16 1908 aged 75. He was buried in the Addington Cemetery. Barbara continued to live in Sydenham but retained an interest in Selwyn, applying along with her brother and daughter for a Coal Mining Lease near Broken River in 1911. She died just before Christmas on 20 December 1919, aged 76, and is buried next to her husband and their youngest daughter Isabella.
