Other Biographical InformationAda Emmeline Bailey was born in 1854 in Christchurch, daughter of Joseph Henry Bailey and Madeline Johanna nee Reitz. Her mother was Dutch or perhaps German. Joseph, Johanna and the elder three children emigrated to Lyttleton on board the "Randolph" arriving in December 1850. She was the first of their children to be born in New Zealand. By the late 1860's Joseph was was running a hotel in Sheffield, which was then known as Kowai Pass but by 1875 he had taken over the Dunsandel Hotel. Ada was married in 1874, on Oct 21st, to Robert James Shanks, an Irishman and clerk, at the Manse, Christchurch. Ada signed the 1892 Petition as A. E. Shanks and went on to sign the 1893 as Ada E. Shanks. She was enrolled to vote in 1893 as no 2493 Ada Emmaline Shanks, Springfield. She was about 39 tears old. By 1896 they had moved away and she was living in Linwood Christchurch. In April 1902 she obtained a separation from her husband after he was convicted of theft and sentenced to six months in jail. She died at Invercargill on April 1st 1941, Robert having pre-deceased her by 37 years, dying in Auckland in 1909. She was buried in St John's Cemetery, Invercargill.
