TitleBrookside Country Women's Institute
DescriptionThirty five women were present when the Institute was formed on 30th July, 1931.
Mrs Stops, Organizer of the Women’s Institute gave an address, exhibited many beautifully made articles and led folk dancing.

Others on the committee were Mesdames Gardiner, Croy, Candy, Greaves and Miss Paynter.
The first meeting was held in the Brookside School, but the next and subsequent meetings were held in the Presbyterian Sunday School.
After the school closed, meetings were held in the old school (now a hall) and in St Luke’s Church Hall from the 1970s.
Meetings included mottos, an interesting range of roll calls such as Uses of Newspapers, Economy in the Home, “Sing, Say or Penny Pay’.
There were demonstrations and competitions on flowers, handcrafts and cooking.
Speaker’s topics included: Red Cross, First Aid, Travel talks, History of Brookside.
Garden parties were held every year at the large homes and gardens of some members – Middlerigg, Westburn, Raywell and Glenrowan.
Annual dances were arranged by the Institute for many years.
During the depression of the 1930s, the Institute contributed to the Governor-General’s Relief fund and collected garments for the unemployed.
During the Second World War they were involved with the Soldiers’ Parcel Fund.
Over the years the Institute has been involved with fundraising projects and support for Nurse Maude, Poppy Day, Plunket, Barnados and Templeton Hospital.
Birthdays of the Institute were always celebrated, often with recitations, musical items and drama presentations.
Christmas parties and outings have been important.
Members who received Good Service Badges were Margaret Bowden, Jean Coe, Ann Bilbrough, Muriel Adams, Peggy Saunders, Jenny Ward and May MacKenzie.
Ann Bilbrough received the Gold Honours Award in 1998 and was also on the Canterbury East Federation executive for 17 years.
