The First Doyleston Publican

TitleThe First Doyleston Publican
DescriptionThomas Tennant, who held a mortgage on Creek Store, Boggy Creek applied for a general license and a wine and beer license in May 1866.
Thomas was himself a publican at Prebbleton. Both applications were refused as the house had been badly managed by his tenants, Walters and Lesley.
Then James Hood, of Leeston, applied for a house occupied by Leslie, in May 1867, as a wine and beer license, but the Bench said that it was not required in the locality.
Hood was however granted a wine and beer license for Leeston, at the same sitting although he had no separate room for ladies.
A year later, James Ferguson Douglas, the next tenant, became the first publican in Doyleston, as the Creek Store, Boggy Creek, was granted a license up to 1 July 1868. (It is not known when the license was granted but Douglas was recorded in the Southern Provinces Almanac of 1868 as having a wine and beer license)
A month later, in August, he was caught selling meals with “free” beer and fined £5. His application, presumably for a renewal of the license, was considered in September and refused as the application was received too late.
Joseph H. Doyle was also charged in January 1869 with selling his clients two gallons of beer, supplying glasses and then letting them drink in his house. The case was dismissed for insufficient evidence.
It appears that both Joseph Doyle and James Blackler applied for licenses at the end of 1869 but both applications were refused.
Joseph Doyle reapplied in April 1871 for a country hotel license and with much support and much opposition, including letters to the editor. He was refused.
The Bench warned Doyle not to build accommodation in the hope that a license might be granted.
In May 1875, Doyle advertised for tenders to alter and add to the Junction Store for use as a hotel.
A month later the Ellesmere Licensing Court granted the application of James Blackler, jun. for a hotel license. (Blackler’s story will appear in another article.
Joseph H. Doyle’s application for a publican’s license was considered at the same court sitting as that of Blackler.
The Bench refused to grant Doyle’s application on the grounds that they did not wish to encourage roadside public houses which only tended to encourage the already excessive drinking habits of the district, and would not provide the necessary accommodation.
Doyle tried unsuccessfully again in 1878.
