Irwell
Description
NameIrwell
Alternative NameIrwell Village
DescriptionA small rural settlement in Canterbury, Irwell is named after the river Irwell. It is divided into two areas: one around the intersection of Leeston and Selwyn Lake Roads, where the (former) Irwell Hall and St Mary's Church are located; and Irwell Village, located further east. In 1903 it had two railway stations: Irwell and Lake Road. The Cyclopedia of New Zealand of that year described a busy settlement:
'Irwell, as a township, has a post office, a blacksmith's shop, and fine roller flour mill, a public school, churches and a creamery. The river Irwell, from which the district takes its name, has its banks thickly planted with willow trees. It empties into the lake, is celebrated for its trout, and is much frequented by anglers during the fishing season'.
