Clara Alley
Description
TitleClara AlleyAlternative Namenée BuckinghamDescriptionIn 1892, newly married Clara Alley moved to Springfield with her husband Frederick, when he became head teacher at Kowai Bush school. The following year, the women’s suffrage movement organised a nationwide petition for Parliament to extend the vote to women. Clara, a keen believer in women’s equal rights, drummed up support for the petition. She is said to have persuaded most local women to sign – some 30 names, including her own, appear on the petition’s Springfield sheet. Clara and Frederick’s six children were also achievers and educators. They included Rewi Alley, writer and political activist; Geoffrey Alley, All Black and the country’s first National Librarian; and Gwen Somerset, a pioneer and leader in New Zealand’s preschool education movement.Middle NameMariaDate of Birth1866
