Building and Features at Te Ara Ātea
Description
NameBuilding and Features at Te Ara ĀteaDescriptionThis collection gives you a behind the scenes look at the construction of Te Ara Ātea, designed by award-winning architects Warren and Mahoney.
The name Te Ara Ātea means unobstructed trail to the world and beyond. This is our new community anchor point - a place for learning and connection which celebrates our heritage and people.
The architects used Tūterakiwhanoa and Te Kete Ika a Rākaihautū traditions as key design drivers throughout the design stages of the project. The cultural narrative is expressed both externally within the façade and entrances and internally within the interior of the larger library, community and performance spaces. These are connected via a fluid double-height atrium with a centrally located jewel-like space called Te Waka Huia, providing a display, research and reflection space for significant local taonga. Internally, the key themes of the narrative have been integrated in both a playful and meaningful way.
Te Ara Ātea is built using practices and systems that lessen the impact on the environment. We have used renewable and recyclable resources and materials in the construction. And we’ve taken care to reduce waste and energy consumption to protect the natural environment around the site.
Its design considers environmental, social and economic factors. This reduces the impact on the environment, respects human health, recognises cultural values and keeps running costs down. As such, Te Ara Ātea an accessible, comfortable and healthy building. Furthermore, the sustainable design is long-sighted, ensuring low running costs through energy efficiency.
