Levi Lowe
Description
TitleLevi LoweSummaryA farmer in the Rolleston areaDescriptionLevi Lowe was the youngest child of Levi Lowe Senior's six children and was the only one born in New Zealand. He was brought up on the farm at Rolleston and took over after his father's death. In 1883, Levi married Amy Jane Carpenter and together they raised a family of four sons and one daughter. Levi Lowe died in Rolleston.
Levi took an active role in the community, as a Justice of the Peace and the establishment of the Rolleston school and the Methodist church at Weedons. As a farmer, Levi's livelihood depended on the supply of seed (grasses, clovers and plantains) to grow food for his grazing animals. Levi took a keen interest in plant breeding, winning a medal at the 1905 Canterbury A & P Show for the quality of his white clover seed. Seed production is still a significant industry in Selwyn District.
Levi was the second of three generations of Levi Lowes who farmed in Rolleston. His son Levi and daughter Amy Edith took over the farm on his death. Nowadays, much of their land is covered by housing, but the Lowe family connection is remembered in the names Levi Road and Levi Park in Rolleston.
