Waddington
Description
NameWaddington DescriptionWaddington is a small settlement, a few minutes' drive from Sheffield.
The land was once part of John Deans' parcel, part of the Homebush run. Farmer William Waddington, for whom the settlement is named, purchased the land in this area and laid out the town in 1873. It is reported that John Deans originally bought the land from the government for two pounds per acre.
The land was then used to farm turnips, oats, wheat and sheep.
In 1875 a primary school was established, named Malvern Public School. In the early 1900s, in Waddington there were two stores, a blacksmith, a builder's shop and a post office with a daily mail service. There was also a railway station that brought goods in from Christchurch.
