Taumata Kūri Prebbleton
Description
NamePrebbletonTaumata KūriDescriptionTaumata Kūri Prebbleton is one of the earliest settlements on the Canterbury Plains with a history spanning nearly 150 years. The district has been known for over a century as a rich and fertile area. Cropping has always played an important part in the district along with sheep farming. Another very important type of land use has been horse breeding and training.
One of the early settlers was the Prebble family who were instrumental in developing the village. The land for the Domain was donated by Mr Edward Prebble. In 1862 John Norris Tosswill sub-divided part of his farm to establish a village, and donated land for a school and church. The school operated until 1872 and was later moved to Longbeach, south of Ashburton.
Today, Prebbleton is one of the high-growth areas in the Selwyn District. The newly-opened Prebbleton Village is located near the cycle trail to Little River and features retail stores, hospitality establishments and a gym.
